Dear Jonathan,
oh! The wonderful world of semantics. I guess we could argue for a while
if the "interval" is supposed to be 1-hour or 8-hours in the case of a running
mean. But I would be prepared to settle for 1-hour as "original resolution", so
let me answer your question directly: YES - there will be a need for this.
Current air quality data bases - the largest are probably the American AQS and
the European AirBase systems - do store hourly data and "daily max 8-hour mean"
values, and you want to be able to differentiate between those automatically
(say in a catalogue application such as GI-Cat or Core.uFind). While this could
in principle be achieved by other means (extra XML metadata), it would indeed
be valuable to have this information also stored directly in the netcdf file in
a way that is easily distinguishable (and automatically distinguishable) from
the "original" 1-hour data.
The current suggestion cell_methods = "max (interval: 1 hour comment:
8-hour running means at 1-hour intervals)" frankly doesn't sound right and
rather convoluted. I'd much rather see something like "max (interval: 8-hour
running means at 1-hour intervals)", or, if this would make it easier to
formulate a grammar rule "max (interval: running means of 8-hours at 1-hour
intervals)". In the latter case, the term "running mean" would substitute the
immediate specification of the interval and fork the parser off to analyze the
rest of the string.
Cheers,
Martin
