Hi Roy, Many thanks for this. The current version of the editor software that I use to maintain the standard name table does check for stray white space, so hopefully there won't be any more instances of this in the future, but I agree that it's a good idea to check that they are being submitted correctly to the NERC vocab server.
I have also replied to Gwyn's email on the mailing list, but I think the list may actually be down at the moment (certainly I can't access the archives online). I'll report the problem to the list owner. I've also copied in a couple of colleagues in BODC so we can take steps to prevent embedded blanks in Standard Names. We work in collaboration with CF and run a series of checks on Standard Name updates before publication. A check for spaces can easily be added. Cheers, Roy.
