 Karl,

 Regarding coordinates vs auxiliary coordinates - there is nothing that
 forces you to make one of these coordinate-type variables under
 consideration a "primary" coordinate, is there?  I think it is completely
 valid for a group of coordinate-type variables to share a common dimension
 name that is not the name of any of the variables.  In such a case, all of
 them would be auxiliary coordinates for one or more data variables.
