Dear @sethmcg Thanks for pointing out this subtlety, which I had not thought about properly. I meant "it" to refer to the dataset. The purpose of the metadata is to describe the contents of the dataset. With the metadata included, the dataset is self-describing, provided also that the metadata can be sufficiently understood without looking up anything. That is, there are two requirements for a self-describing dataset: (1) It includes metadata, which explains the data, (2) The metadata is self-explanatory (so there's no need for metametadata!).
