@JonathanGregory This is all very good, and merging the two seems logical,
especially as #319 is an offshoot from this issue. A couple of minor comments:

* In the definition of the `standard` calendar the switch-over date could be
mentioned. How about:
"`standard`: Mixed Gregorian/Julian calendar as defined by Udunits. Dates
onwards from 1582-10-15 follow the Gregorian system and earlier dates follow
the Julian system. This is the default."
* Could the deprecation of the `gregorian` calendar be a bit more prominent?
After all, it was a calendar in its own right, even though being equivalent to
the `standard` calendar (or vice versa). How about below the list of calendars
writing a sentence (own paragraph) like:
"The `gregorian` calendar is deprecated, instead use the equivalent `standard`
calendar"
* Indeed, the `udunits.dat` file is outdated, see [this comment from
2017](https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/support/help/MailArchives/udunits/msg01006.html__;!!G2kpM7uM-TzIFchu!mIFSTaVX4Fm2mItaJJfFJYFMMFBn3jcM2G1Ox4WeX6mdMqMQED9WvHyoqqJJ9sGaphC5m9IwdAg$
). It has been replaced by xml files, which are a bit awkward [for humans] to
read. @davidhassell might have a better overview.
