aaaarrrrrggggghhhh, just installed the cumulative patch for IIS: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS02-018.asp
After rebooting, all local user accounts are preceded with <machine_name>\, as if the server is on a domain, which it isn't (active directory isn't installed either). This meant that the Internet Guest Account couldn't be found, and when I added it again as is now <machine_name>\IUSR<machine_name>, I'm told IIS can't manage the password because it sees this as a non-local account! again, aaaarrrrgggghhhh I uninstalled the patch, no good. Anyone any other ideas about how to get my system back to the way it was?
