Never looked at that, because I never had to. In general, on would reboot the system using a special bootdisk, make the image, and reboot to the normal OS. And if you know for certain that the network is down on certain regular intervals it is not too hard to schedule it. But I wouldn't recommend it on 24/7/365 systems.
