Just an FYI, caveat, whatever, the latest version of Apache v2.x (2.0.43, last I checked) DOES NOT work with CFMX. The last version of Apache 2 that DOES work is 2.0.40 (after the CFMX updater is installed). I think Macromedia will add Apache 2.0.43 support with the second updater (due out soon).
If you'd rather, Apache 1.3.27 is the latest release before Apache 2 (again, last I checked), and that works with CFMX. Apache can be obtained at http://httpd.apache.org/. You'll have to dig a little to find the 1.3.27 binary installer. Also, you'll want to read through the docs. to set up your configuration file for Apache. But it is not hard at all. Linux is a lot easier than you think though, if you were to go with Linux, stick with 7.2 or 7.3, bleeding edge is no place for a server (I almost wish I hadn't upgraded to 8 on my dev box, but that's another subject).
