If you want to purchase your own, try ServerWarden by BCMP (or BCP or BVMP
or somesuch nonsense; I can never remember).  It's a couple hundred bucks,
but it'll monitor any port on any URL you want, and sends E-mail, pages,
whatever.  I just run it on a separate server at a friend's place.

If you want a service, I recommend InternetSeer.  They're not the BEST,
but
you can get the service for free if you sign up for their advertising.  If
you don't like that, it's like $99 a year or something similar.  I've
noticed that they occasionally lag behind, which is why I went out and
bought ServerWarden.

I know there are open source ones too, although I've never used
them.  Also,
check out webmin for Linux -- if I remember right, it offers a ping tool.

Sorry about being vague/loose on some of these -- it should be enough to
get
you to the right info, but feel free to write me if not.

thanks,
bruce
