Ahh you didn't mention that the text was coming from MS Word... There may be something you can do other than this, but you ought to consider putting a WYSIWYG editor into your application.
Search the archives from this list (see below) at the bottom of this message for some free ones out there. You will need one that uses the DLLS from Microsoft. They usually preserve MS Word formatting. Now, there may be other solutions that I am not aware of .. this list will probably let you know what they are.
