Thinking In Java by Bruce Eckel is pretty good. I learned Java originally from Sun's own Java Language Tutorial and the other official Java books. An interesting Java book for the (mostly) complete applications it provides is "Industrial Strength Java" - not great code but the examples are useful and thought-provoking.
