I've really liked reading the first few chapters of Thinking in Java and Thinking in C++, but with no background in these languages didn't know if they were any good. Thinking In Java by Bruce Eckel is pretty good. I learned Java originally from Sun's own Java Language Tutorial and the other official Java books. An interesting Java book for the (mostly) complete applications it provides is "Industrial Strength Java" - not great code but the examples are useful and thought-provoking.
