I think Java would be a good example.

There are no variants of the SQL standard. There are versions, SQL-86, 
SQL-89, SQL-92 (a.k.a. SQL2) and SQL:1999 (a.k.a. SQL3). And SQL would 
also be a good example, although I can imagine the step would be a bit 
bigger because it is really a third party (the ISO) maintaining the 
standard.
