Considering that SQL has been around for almost as long as I live I find 
it hard to believe it is an issue with the language. More likely it is a 
user error.

Use cfqueryparam.

That sounds like: I know my function for multiplication works, I 
multiplicated 55 numbers with 0 correctly until I tried to multiply with 
something else.
