The soon to be 4eleased version 4 of MySQl, will definitely bring it into the mainstream and direct competition with Oracle and SQL2k (stored procedures and triggers)
No, it will not have all the features of Oracle 9i, but how many installations actually use all of them? It will not need a GIG of RAM or a 5 GIG swap space as Oracle requires either. And on my system the current installation of MySQL is not slow at all. ===================================== Douglas White group Manager mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.samcfug.org ===================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Paul Ashenfelter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, January 14, 2003 8:20 PM Subject: Re: WOT: MySQL in the Enterprise | > Why are people surprised about the performance of mySQL versus whatever? | Generally speaking, the more features an application has, the slower it will | be. Thus, we can say that the more features a database has (seeing as how a | database platform is actually just an application), the slower it will be. | It's a miracle that Oracle is as fast as it is :) | | <sarcasm>Yeah, I mean why use this ColdFusion garbage when you can do it all | in Perl or Python for free.</sarcasm> | | The more features *that you need* an application has, the better choice it | is. Access can be a great data source. So can flat text files. MySQL's | better than those though, isn't it. I mean, it's a lot more complicated than | text files, takes longer to write to the disk, but those features are | somewhat useful.... | | | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=4 FAQ: http://www.thenetprofits.co.uk/coldfusion/faq This list and all House of Fusion resources hosted by CFHosting.com.
