You can't really select the "optimal configuration" until you have the 
application written and you're doing load and performance testing.

...a situation like this sounds a good candidate for CFMX for J2EE. By 
using multiple servers, multiple CFMX instances and multiple context 
roots, you should be able to create a flexible, scalable infrastructure 
that allows you to share code whilst isolating each "different web 
site".

We (WTG, not the CF product team!) are doing extensive load testing of 
the new macromedia.com site at the moment and getting good results with 
a relatively small cluster - a few Solaris servers with a few CFMX for 
J2EE instances on each. Macromedia's site is fairly "high demand" 
(about 6m page views per day)...
