Having moved into hard-core Microsoft SQL 7/2000 dba work over the past
year, I'd suggest these:

For T-SQL development:
Guru's Guide to Transact SQL (Ken Henderson, Addison-Wesley)
Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procs, XML, and HTML (Ken Henderson,
Addison-Wesley)

For T-SQL admin
admin911: SQL Server 2000 (Bryan Knight; Osborne press)
SQL 2000 Resource Kit (Microsoft) -- tools with it are worth the $50
Inside SQL Server 2000 (Microsoft) -- only if you want to understand
internals

and of course
