Sorry for the cryptic subject but it does cover our problem. We're
running CF 4.5 on NT 4sp6. Lately (past few weeks) all of our
production servers have, seemingly randomly been starting.

In other words the server log file shows "The ColdFusion Application
Service has been Started", but no "The ColdFusion Application Service
has been Stopped".

When we stop the service manually, of course, both messages are nicely
grouped. There seems to be no indication of server trouble before this
happens. The late-returning thread count doesn't increase, memory usage
on the boxes is in the 10% range, and there are no DB issues at the same
time.

These apps are vastly different beasties... The good app (meaning, of
course, the one I work on) usually has less than 3 or 4 errors in the
application log (mostly none) but the others are old and rickety and the
application logs fill up pretty quick.

But since the happens on all the servers (more on the rickety apps tho')
there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason.

We're looking into the possibility that some new monitoring software was
installed - although the servers are maintained by different groups
(three internally, 5 at Digex) so that's unlikely. We've made no other
architectural changes (we're still at CF 4.5... We don't make changes
quick or often...) that could explain this.

In any case the servers are starting a lot...

Thanks in advance,

Jim Davis
