I can't/won't speak for Ben, but I don't think it's any secret that with the
advent of Flash MX, MM is trying very hard to break the perception that
"Flash is for designers." I would take his statements and MM's actions
(i.e., Royale) to suggest that they are making a concerted effort to
introduce Flash MX as a viable tool for the enterprise market. If you think
about MM's push over the last year plus (starting with the introduction of
the MX product family), they are trying to into the enterprise marketplace,
which is both more lucrative and will allow their products to continue to
grow over time.

I highly recommend Branden Hall and Samuel Wan's "Object-Oriented
Programming with ActionScript" as the first place to go. Colin Moock's
"ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition" is also a
great primer (although his treatment is more about syntax as opposed to how
to use the language effectively), but Branden and Samuel really show how to
use ActionScript for high-quality applications. I'm not so sure that
learning Java is going to help you with learning ActionScript with Flash
Remoting, but that's just my opinion.

As for scaling Flash Remoting applications, I was recently made aware of a
bit of code in the "Certified Macromedia Flash MX Developer Study Guide"
that is supposedly really the only way to allow Flash Remoting to scale
under load. I believe one of Matt Liotta's engineers came up with the code
snippet and contributed it to the book. I would also look there if you're
serious about developing production applications with FR.

Regards,
Dave.
