I've asked this before and no one seemed to have tried it yet.
It is theoretically possible to run CF Server for Linux on *BSD with the
Linux emulator (which is supposed to run faster than Linux itself).
However, there is a small amount of Linux functionality that is not covered
by the emulator. It is small and infrequently used, from what I understand,
but I have no idea if CF Server would use any of that functionality. My
*BSD geek friends insist that the missing stuff really isn't important and
that they have yet to find software for Linux that does not run on *BSD.
They do run server software on FreeBSD and/or OpenBSD but none of them have
specifically tried CF Server. The case is probably that the software will
run. There may be problems with specific functions but I can't predict
which functions nor if there will be any problems at all. Whether this will
be the case or whether the software won't run at all would depend on how
the server software uses its own functionality and I just don't know that.
The only way that we can find this out is if somebody tests it thoroughly.
When I'm rich... I'm going to get another box and install some BSD (haven't
decided on one yet) and set up CF Server on it. But let's not count on my
being rich any time soon, OK? I need a new fridge more than I need a BSD
box in my house. I am obviously failing to live up to my geeky potential by
forsaking a BSD box for a fridge that keeps things cold but my ice cream
keeps melting. And melted ice cream is a very sad thing.
