Exactly our setup! (except it's weblogic not cfmx) All Alteon boxes in
between those clusters. Solaris 8 for the most part with Apache. 

CFMX we have on it's own at the moment...but with the licensing change I
believe we'll be on a small cluster of Jrun/CFMX in no time. Either that
or deployed directly on Weblogic...but that raises other concerns
considering the sensitivity of the applications running on there...plus
our CF boxes take heavy reporting loads.

Yes. We have this sort of setup (effectively):

                Internet
        www.macromedia.com (DNS)
                Firewall & Load Balancer
        Web Servers (clustered, Apache)
                Firewall & Load Balancer
        App Servers (clustered, CFMX 6.1)
                Firewall
        Database Servers and other system (e.g., JMS message hubs etc)
