I've had a read and it doesn't sound like what we are getting. When I did the thread 
dump none of the threads was apparently waiting on any SQL resource, and this technote 
exclusively covers SQL related problems.

I wouldn't have described our problem as a hang - it overloads, then recovers, either 
by itself or with intervention. The intervention is to restrict the number of 
connections in IIS. Recovery can take over a minute if it is left to its own devices.
