Matt's answer was dead on, but probably not what you were looking for. X11 is the underlying system that drives the GUI of pretty much all *nix applications that use a windowing environment, including the various desktop environments (like KDE and GNOME).
With X11 support on the Mac, combined with it's *nix underpinnings, you basically have the ability to run any major *nix product. Without X, you'd be limited to console apps (emacs, pine, lynx) and/or daemons (apache, tomcat, mysql). barneyb --- Barney Boisvert, Senior Development Engineer AudienceCentral [EMAIL PROTECTED] voice : 360.756.8080 x12 fax : 360.647.5351 www.audiencecentral.com > -----Original Message----- > From: Dan O'Keefe [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2003 6:24 PM > To: CF-Talk > Subject: RE: MAC & Linux laptops (was about blue dragon.) > > > Not to sound like a MAC virgin, but x11 apps?
