MySQL has multiple different storage engines that all reside underneath the common MySQL interface. Some of the storage engines (innoDB and BDB) support transactions, the rest don't. If yuo don't want to use a transactional engine, you can duplicate the functionality with table locks (on any engine), thought that obviously has a great effect on concurrency.
