People invest time into answering questions on this list too. If the
community profits less from that investment in time (because it takes
more time to answer less questions will be answered), wouldn't it be
better for the community if those people offered their advise through
a medium they feel comfortable with?

Quite the contrary. Most people that unsubscribed where the people
that offered some of the best answers. And the real value of a
mailinglist is not the volume of posters or posts, but in the quality
of the answers.
