Man, you nailed it.  I suspect most of the "good" shared server CF
hosting that exists right now is done by development companies for their
clients, for exactly the reasons you've mentioned.  Fairly safe if
you're writing all the code running on the box.  In a "blind" shared
environment you really have to cross your fingers, both as a customer
and a host.

As in most things, you have to weigh the revenues against the costs.  If
you find the hassles and the support costs don't justify the income, get
the hell out of shared CF hosting and don't look back.  On the other
hand, perhaps sharply increased prices and stricter support policies
could allow you to continue.  The higher hosting prices alone may scare
off the really amateur developers.  There may be a very strong market in
serving CF developers, such as those on this list, by offering them
colocated, managed servers, on which they host only their own client
sites.  The "managed" would be the key here.  You build or buy the
server, install all the server software, including server application
(mail, DNS, etc.) which you choose.  You'd charge proportionately higher
for this service than just colocating someone's box in your facility.
