checking for no date...

I'm using this system of checking for available properties based on the fact that there would be no data in my date_sold [ DateTime ] field.

I've ran these queries but it gets rejected...BTW using Access for testing, will be ported to MySQL.

select * from estates where date_sold = null
select * from estates where date_sold = ''
