I've used Ablecommerce, and setup an Ecommerce web hosting site with it.

That's really what it is great for, if you have a solution you wish to
provide a customer, or if you want to provide a service where someone can
log in and maintain and configure their own webstore.

They can check their orders, archive invoices..edit and maintain their own
product catalogs using HTML descriptions..etc.
All the standard things that you would want and expect for a Webstore, or a
webmall.

The large distributorship type functions??
Hmm..I don't know how large you talking about, but this ain't Oracle's
E-Store package.. :-)

Anything that Ablecommerce wasn't designed for, it can technically be
modified for if you purchase the more expensive Ablecommerce Developers
edition.
However, doing those customisations isn't the easiest of things.

When you buy Ablecommerce, you get access to their company support services,
which is very good. Their tech support was top notch when I needed it.

But you're still going to have to know you're Coldfusion, to understand
their code, as well as to do you're own modifications and have them fit in.

What you're describing could be seperated into different CF page(s),a
sub-application let's say, that will accept the user selections and display
the created product, ..and then you could pass the selections the user made
back into Ablecommerce, so that its databases are properly updated and the
invoices etc. get done right.

Or better yet, how about breaking it out into some Active X controls..COM
objects or what have you. You could perhaps use the Metastream plugin from
Metacreations to do some dazzling 3D fly-around effects for displaying the
products..and then use WDDX (never used it before, but I think this is what
it is for), or even a simple call to the appropriate Ablecommerce .cfm page
passing URL variables and then let Able do its stuff.

If this is a highly specialised application, however, you may not want to
get something "off the shelf" to do it.
It may be worth it to invest in a custom designed solution.

Hope that this helped..
in some way :-)
