Since I sell services - I respond to a service request with a payment request
via PayPal.
since there is no re-direct - the customer will manually use his own account to
pay the invoice.
If they do not have a PayPal account, they are prompted to set one up for free,
and PayPal even deposits $5.00 into their account when signing up.
They are also given an option to pay via snail mail as well, and this system has
worked well for me for four years.
If I were selling products, via a shopping cart, that would be a different
matter, and perhaps a payment gateway would be needed.
At any rate, I do not store customer credit card information at all.
your mileage may vary.

Any time a shopper is redirected to another site to pay, the seller is losing
credibility and the site as whole seems a lot less professional. Not too mention
the inherent risks of scams, whereas your server gets compromised a link gets
changed, and your shoppers are paying someone else.
