development company" that sold IDX web sites to real estate agents. It
never materialized for various reasons (One of which a low cost
semi-national competitor entered the market listingware.com -- built in CF
mind you).
I can probably provide some info to you, but keep in mind it may be dated
a year or two.
IDX stands for Internet Data Exchange. It means that a realtor can put
the listings of other realtors on their web site. Nothing more. It is not
a data format.
You'll have to find out from the MLS system what format the data is
available to you in. In my testing (a while ago) they were providing text
files of comma delimited data (if memory serves me). I have a vague memory
of bak files which would have been SQL Server backups. I tried to preach
the value of web services, but the MLS system we were dealing with was
adamantly against it.
VOW (Virtual Office Web) was much more interesting (and
controversial). Any realtor could opt out of IDX, and therefore their
listings could not be displayed on the Internet by other realtors. If a
web browsing person signed up on the realtor's web site, then the argument
was made that the user was no longer anonymous, they were a client. If so,
then the realtor could show them all MLS listings (even those that opted
out of IDX). If they are a client, then does it matter if the client is
shown listings sitting in an office crouched over a machine, or using a
self guided tour on the web site?
I built a demo (which I probably have archived somewhere) however it was
specific to the data of the local MLS that we had access to; and probably
will be useless (unless you're in the same area).
