I suspect it's more expensive to buy the Director IDE than it is to buy one
copy of CFMX Standard, but I don't think there are any redistribution costs
for your Director applications, so I don't see how it can be more expensive.
As for the languages it uses, who cares? As long as they can do the job,
they should be sufficient.
Out of curiosity, what can't you do with Director that you need to do for
your application?

It seems to me that if you want to write something that isn't a web
application, there are better alternatives than PHP (or Perl, for that
matter, even though it's a general-purpose scripting language).
While Java may seem to be overkill to you, it seems right on target to me -
it provides all of the functionality to build desktop applications. It will
probably take longer for you to learn it and to develop your application,
but it will be more effective in the long run. As previously mentioned,
there are other alternatives as well.
