So if you have an application.cfm file with nothing other than meta
tags, it would be reasonable to assume that could be very powerful for
search engines to pick up on for every page of your site??

Is there any adverse effect of having the same meta keywords or
description for every page?

Nope Tim...I think you missd the point...it's BAD!!

Search engines like fresh and unique content...so if the meta tags are the same for EVRY page you are SCREWED!!

Don't forget to use unique title tags and even alt tags for images if you can.

Some other tips:
-too many concepts on the same page is bad
-text in images cannot be indexed (no the alt tag is not the answer here)
-if you feel like you're being tricky...re-think it...search engines will de-list you for all kinds of things
-as Che mentioned - site map is great!
-most spiders/bots won't follow pop-ups
-re-directs are bad and won't be indexed

That's all that's coming out of the head right now ;-)

Cheers
