There are 3 things you need to process credit cards online. First, you need a business checking account. A personal checking account will not do. Most business checking accounts have minimum balances of at least $2500 and only offer interest for much larger account.
Second, you need a merchant account. This is what allows you to accept credit cards, whether you were doing it in a brick-and-mortar store, or online.
Finally, you need the gateway, sometimes called an online processor. Authorize.Net and Verisign PayFlow are common ones. That's what does the verification of the card for you. It usually takes a few days for the funds to make it to your business checking account.
You generally have to pay fees for both the gateway as well as the merchant account. So for many small merchants, PayPal is a nice alternative until their business grows enough to support the cost of their own merchant account.
