cftree cftreeitem CF5 vs CFMX61

We have just upgradred CF5 to CFMX61. One of our applications is using <cftree> and <cftreeitem>. The code did not change; in CF5 the tree displays properly but in CFMX61, some leaf-nodes are added at the end of the tree. I read the documenation and some of the comments of the forums but I have not been able to see anything different between the two versions. Can anyone tell me how I can go about fixing my problem?
