Check out www.asp.net and www.windowsforms.net. I'd start with C#. It's very similar to Java syntax, so you'll have a very quick transition to Java.
Console apps are _very_ easy to write in .NET, especially if you have the VS IDE (buy the standard edition - it's only ~$100).
