I think you've answered you own question - buy a bigger DB server.
Stored procs are almost always more efficent than select statements, esp. for 
operations on large datasets.
You might look at caching more information in the application or session 
scopes to relieve a little of the load, but that's only going to be a stop 
gap - I assume the number of users/items in the system is only going to get 
bigger :-)
