I've had very little problems with updates in my life. I wonder why, if after "just about any" update you end up with an unstable system you're still using Windows at all? I've personally been quite pleased with my experiences overall (isolated events notwithstanding). But if I had the trouble you describe I would have gone to Mac or Linux long ago.
