In reading that last post I gave the wrong impression: I really like SmarterMail. I use it for my own personal domain services. I use ASSP as a gateway in front of it so I don't care about its bad spam performance (they mean well, and it has the potential to be a great system, but it isn't yet).
You can also hook in SpamAssassin into it directly via a free 3rd party plugin, as well as ClamAV (both are free). I do the latter and it works *great*, with automated virus def updates. SM has some really nifty features. The crowd-pleasing web mail is not to be underestimated when it comes to your clients' perception of the value of your service. I also like its ability to listen on a 2nd port so I can bypass ISPs that block port 25. Config'ing it with ASSP was a real pain, though. Turned me into an open relay until we could figure out what was wrong. That was a week of pure Hell. Anyone who wants advice on that score, I can save you a lot of grief.
