I'm going through this same process. I ran into the same problem as you with all the examples showing FB3 to FB4. So I took a class on FB4 and now it really isn't so scary.
One thing I have discovered is that the "myglobals" file in FB4 is the equivalent of the app_locals file in FB2, with the addition of setting vars for "self" and "myself".
