When it comes right down to it all a Captcha is a test that easy for humans,
but difficult for machines.

For sighted people the traditional image of distorted letters makes perfect
sense: it's easy for people to recognize this, but nearly impossible for
machines.  It seems to me that a similar test could be done with sound for
the blind easily enough: run a random series of letters and numbers into a
text-to-speech engine and play the sound: the end user types in what they
hear.

I'd be surprised if there aren't already aural Captchas out there already.

That would leave out those (few) who are both blind and deaf and need to use
Braille readers, but a "contact us" could be put in place to help them as
well.  It's a pain, yes, but not an unexpected one.

The bottom line is that this kind of security is required because a very
small minority of people are complete and utter assholes.  In fact that's
pretty much the definition for any kind of security.  ;^)
