You are not buying software - and this isn't an MS thing. Most software companies (the vast majority) do not sell software - they sell licenses to software. The software company retains full ownership of the software. Transferring your license is possible in some cases, but not in others (for example none of the "Action Pack" software licenses are transferable). Check the EULA that came with the software. This only makes sense when you think about it. If you owned the software then you could do whatever you pleased with it, right? But you don't own it - you're allowed to use it within the confines of the license agreement. Pretty much all software companies follow this model. Most open source licenses do not transfer ownership rights of the software. The author of the code is the owner, not the user of the software.
