I don't plan to make this my primary business, but I do see some gold in them thar hills! :o)
I know Windows 2000 and XP have built-in backup software (not initially installed on the Home edition, but available on the CD), but I guess the client would have to use third-party software to accomplish the FTP transfer, right? Unless MS is starting to include that capability in XP...? If the client has to install FTP software, them I guess I'm back to where I have been...experimenting with Serv-U and FTP Voyager. It makes a decent solution, especially since Serv-U is offering from 3-5 free Voyagers with each Serv-U purchase during February. And...if I can run a scheduled task with CF to notify of successful backups and compare previous numbers of files on the server to current files, along with other possible information, then I guess that would be sufficient. I just don't want to have to review logs every day for every client to see if backups were successful... As far as RemoteData goes, I've already been using IBackup.com, and they've got a great solution...email and all. No glitches from setup to execution...good prices, too... 5 GB of storage starting at $9.95 a month for 5 GB... Any other thoughts or suggestions, Justin? Anyone? Yes. For the backup itself, the easiest way may be to write a script/batch file that can be scheduled on the client side that would use tools included with the OS to create the backup file then FTP it to your server. I do something similar with my workstation here to make backup copies of my accounting databases to get backups up to two of my servers. If you're planning to make this your primary business, you might consider having custom backup/transfer software written for the client side. There is a company here in town that does basically what you're talking about call RemoteData. They have more information about their processes at www.remotedata.net. ----------------------------------- Justin D.
