FTPV *can* be twitchy, especially if you try and do something like
specify a single folder that has a zillion subfolders.  Thats too much
for it to handle oftentimes.  When I am backing up a web server I
typically specify a scheduled job for each web site on the server,
rather than specifying my web root and letting it have at it.  If you
segment it like that FTPV should work just fine.   I haven't
experienced the other stability issues you mention.

I'll check out the other option you mention.  Could be useful as I do
a LOT of this sort of thing and am always looking for an easier way.
