Wow, that's a pretty sad oversight on the part of Macromedia. Basically, if you use any session-based CFCs you are forced to use sticky sessions. And even that doesn't help at all for failover. They added a lot of nice stuff in 7.0, but they also dropped the ball on several things and this is one of them.
