The tech may not have been an idiot....but alot of them really don't think for themselves...just follow their script and go home at the end of the day.... Can you tell I just had 3 orders (same order 3 times) cancelled at Dell and all I got was the standard "well sir...my hands are tied...I can't help you....you don't fall under the perfect order and therefore my brain is going to short-circuit and smoke will pour from my ears" kind of responses.
