I've done this using a program which you install on the server called ImageMagick. You can get this free. As well you will want to install the custom coldfusion tags from Alagad (? not sure of the spelling). There is a slight change needed to be made to the custom tags for the newer ColdFusion Servers, really simple. I will have to dig up the info on this again as my instructor and I found this problem and we discovered a fix for it.

Using the Image Magick you can create pretty much any kind of image you want.
