Reading it and, more importantly, knowing in detail exactly how it was conducted, by whom and for what purpose is required before placing much faith in "studies" of this sort. And statements, direct or otherwise, don't necessarily constitute fact...they are just that, statements.
Statistics can be made to say most anything you want them to and surveys/polls are so easily biased as to be of marginal value other than as filler material for the companies that pay for them.
