I guess if I had been having a tough time finding work, I might go ahead and take the exam just to get a leg up on actually landing interviews, but I've always been against the whole "Certified Advanced ThisAndThat Master Level-4 Guru..." kind of thing. Most of the best people I've ever worked with (in any field) didn't spend much in the way of time, money or energy taking the tests and getting the certificates. I feel like I can stand out from the crowd pretty well on my body of work. I've got enough work to show that I feel I can better and more honestly represent my level of expertise with that than I can with a piece of paper. I'm usually skeptical of the certificate in the first place, as I've personally always been an extraordinarily strong test-taker. I feel like, on any given subject, that I can test out at a much higher level than that at which I can actually perform. So, right or wrong, I tend to think that others can do that too and thus I tend put very little weight on those test scores.
