Oh, I totally agree that having something built-in would be better,
but I'm a big fan of fully encapsulated hacks to make maintenance
easier.  I can't speak for this scenario, but I'm almost always in
favor of trading performance for maintainability, since performance is
easy to gain back other ways (SQL tuning, caching, more hardware,
etc.).

Did you add this to the MM wishlist?
