Oh, I totally agree that having something built-in would be better, but I'm a big fan of fully encapsulated hacks to make maintenance easier. I can't speak for this scenario, but I'm almost always in favor of trading performance for maintainability, since performance is easy to gain back other ways (SQL tuning, caching, more hardware, etc.).
