Hi Ray,

ever gave the following site a shot:
http://www.csscreator.com/version2/pagelayout.php

You can define which doctype you'd like to have and even define some
base colors.
I used it for a template exactly as you wish. When I remember
correctly the trick is to use the margin of the center column for the
outer columns.

Perhaps its of some use for you...
